Three Rivers Health is a modern progressive medical practice formed by the amalgamation of the Allenton Medical Practice and the Gym Company Medical in 2017.
We work from modern purpose-built premises at 7-11 Allens Rd, Ashburton. We provide a one-stop shop for your primary health issues and also have the following health providers on site:
Our mission is: To care, to enable, to contribute to the community
We endeavour to ensure the following core values are maintained at all times: being patient centred, focused on excellence, with integrity, trust, team work and sustainability.
We have a large number of staff that serve approximately half of the Ashburton population. Our team is very experienced and pride themselves on providing the best possible primary health care.
Three Rivers Health is the largest GP practice in Mid- Canterbury, a thriving rural based economy with a strong tradition of grain and sheep farming but now with a new focus on dairying.
Many people move here for the lifestyle and work-life balance that the region provides. The main town of Ashburton is large enough to provide all the services and amenities that you expect in a larger city but without the hassles often associated with big cities. There are great restaurants and cafes for dining and relaxing in.
Your daily commute can be as long or as short as you wish, with reasonably priced housing available in the town or surrounding hinterlands. Fantastic views of the mountains are available from many areas and access to outdoor pursuits are readily available.
Whether it’s hiking, short walks, golfing, fishing, hunting or ski-ing, it’s all near-by.
There are great educational facilities available in the region and the people are very welcoming. Christchurch, the South Island’s largest city is only an hour’s drive away and easily accessible.
We wanted to go on an adventure by working for a year in New Zealand as general practitioners, and were very pleased that we got to spend our time at Three Rivers Health in Ashburton.
Coming from Canada, we weren’t sure how easy it would be to get used to the Kiwi healthcare system. However, the staff at Three Rivers provided us with a good introduction, and worked with us to ensure we were comfortable before increasing our workload in steps, eventually to a full schedule. The other physicians working there were excellent, always being available to talk or answer any questions we had about New Zealand medicine, the healthcare system, local resources etc.. The nurses, receptionists and administrative staff were all just as friendly as well. It was also helpful to have other services on site such as a pharmacy, physiotherapy clinic, counsellor, podiatry clinic and radiology suite.
The Three Rivers building itself is quite spacious and relatively new and modern looking. The computers are not at all slow, with good, quick connection to the Internet. The electronic medical record system works well, and as of writing this, there are some exciting, positive changes in the works.
In regards to the town of Ashburton, many things are within easy walking distance. There are numerous gyms, wonderful cafes, an excellent domain (public gardens), with all the while having beautiful snow-capped mountains in the background. Nearby local attractions include the Mt Hutt Ski Field, the Rakaia Gorge, and the Hakatere Conservation Park. Ashburton is very centrally located on the South Island, allowing for easy travel to anywhere else on the island. It is only about an hour away from Christchurch, which has great parks, museums and restaurants. The airport at Christchurch is within easy reach for those wanting to explore the North Island or other destinations.
Overall, we were extremely happy with our year in New Zealand, and would definitely recommend Three Rivers to other locums, especially those who want to explore this beautiful country.
